Dental Bridges: Q & A

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge, also called a fixed partial denture, is used to permanently replace missing teeth. It consists of two parts: a prosthetic tooth and two crowns on either side of your missing teeth.

Made from strong materials like porcelain or zirconia, your dental bridge looks and feels like your real teeth. They are also durable so you can chew, bite, speak, and smile normally.

What are the benefits of a dental bridge?

Dental bridges improve your dental health and quality of life, offering benefits such as:

  • Preventing surrounding teeth from shifting
  • Improved ability to chew, drink and speak
  • Increased confidence in your complete, natural-looking smile

It may take a few weeks to adjust to your new dental bridge, but you should start to notice these benefits quickly after it is placed.

How does your dentist attach a dental bridge?

To receive a dental bridge, you’ll need to make two appointments. During your first appointment, the teeth on either side of the gap are prepared for crowns. Dr. Perdomo shapes your teeth by shaving off the outside of the teeth so the crowns can fit over them easily.

A dental technician takes a mold of your mouth and pictures of your teeth. This information is sent to a lab where your custom bridge is created to match the shade, shape, and size of your natural teeth. You’ll wear temporary crowns to protect the shaved teeth until your next appointment.

Once your bridge has arrived, you’ll come back to have it bonded to your teeth with a special dental cement. You may need to come back every few weeks to ensure the bridge is comfortable and secure.

How long can I keep my dental bridge?

Like a natural tooth, your dental bridge needs to be brushed and flossed regularly. With proper care, along with regular cleaning visits with Dr. Perdomo, you should be able to enjoy your dental bridge for about 10 years.

Dr. Perdomo and the staff at Reliant Dental Group have over 20 years of experience placing dental bridges. You can rely on them to provide efficient, timely care with long-lasting results. Take the first step toward a more complete smile by calling or booking an appointment online.
