Crown Q & A
What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns, made of porcelain or zirconia, cover damaged teeth relieving pain and protecting teeth from further harm. These strong materials look and feel like real teeth so you can chew, smile, and speak comfortably.
Crowns a provide a long-term treatment option for dental problems such as injured teeth, severe cavities or worn, aging teeth. A crown lasts between 20 and 30 years, but can easily be replaced if necessary.
What conditions do dental crowns treat?
Dentists use crowns to treat many serious problems including:
- Cracked teeth
- Broken teeth
- Aging teeth
- Severe cavities
- Weak teeth (due to fillings or other problems)
- Stained teeth that cannot be treated with whitening
- Teeth trauma
Your crown corrects the issue and improves the appearance and function of your teeth. The crown may prevent future problems that could cause you to lose the tooth.
How is a dental crown placed?
A dental crown takes two office visits to the new, state-of-the-art Reliant Dental Group facility. During your first appointment, Dr. Perdomo removes cavities or other parts of the tooth that are damaged. He’ll then carefully shape the tooth so that the new crown will fit over it securely.
A dental specialist will then take a mold of your tooth, which will be used to make a personalized crown. Until your next appointment, you’ll wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth.
Reliant Dental Group offers a quick turnaround time on crowns so you’ll be back for your second appointment in a few days. On your second visit, your permanent crown will be bonded to your tooth using specialized glue. The crown will match the shade and shape of your other teeth so that you feel comfortable when you chew and when you smile.
What are the benefits of dental crowns?
Your high-quality crown should feel great and offer you benefits like:
